Our campaign takes place in the Border Princes and begins in the Imperial Calendar year of 2521. This is one year since the Third Great Battle of Black Fire Pass, and here we diverge from any and all official timeline lore going forward. We firmly believe in taking what you want from a wargaming background/setting and making it your own, with absolute and full freedom. The beauty of narrative wargaming is in seeing a story unfold through play, and getting immersed more and more as each battle has context and meaning.
So, at the beginning of our campaign, the Empire is reeling from the Third Great Battle of Black Fire Pass. The Emperor Karl Franz, now 45 years old, was badly wounded even as he slew the great orc warlord Vorbad Ironjaw at the climax of the battle, and is having to be assisted in his rule of the great realm by his Privy Council. The Elector Count of Averland, Marius Leitdorf, is dead - killed in the battle - and has yet to be succeeded by anyone due to the high politics in the Province.
Duke Barrik reigns in the city of Akendorf, the Northmost city of the Border Princes, and seeks to increase the Empire's influence over those lands whilst retaining his familial links to Averland back through the Black Fire Pass. The Duke contends with remnant orc warbands, the machinations of Tilean city states, the influences of Zharadim (our re-imagining of Araby), and many other rivals, friends and foes that the Old World has to offer - as shall be seen.
The chronicler of the events so far is General Reinhardt Weissmann of the Altdorf 7th Expeditionary Army, who has been sent to Akendorf to aid Duke Barrik, officially to help in the Duke's efforts to expand the Empire's influence. There are rumours that there are those back in the Imperial Court who want Weissman out the way for various reasons, and it's a source of some tension that sent with the Altdorf 7th's forces is a regiment of the Imperial Reiksguard, led by Sir Hector Vandt. Their intentions are unclear, as their loyalty is first and foremost to the Emperor, who may want an eye kept on Weissman and Duke Barrik both.
Expect lots of narrative battles and side quests using skirmish rules and even Advanced Heroquest! Much has happened already, and there is lots more to come!
